Ashly Hull is Running for School Board Trustee and I was Not Aware Of This Deal that the Lower Sunshine Coast and Gulf Island Students Have With B.C. Ferries.??? Can Someone Clear this up for Me ???.....Currently, students of the Lower Sunshine Coast and Gulf Islands enjoy free ferry travel for school-related activities. I will see an end to this inequality for our students.. ... See MoreSee Less
Aaron Lewis ReidThe inequality is very true. For the last six years the PR Board of Education has been pushing for our kids to have the same rights and we just keep getting the same answer - that that's just the way it's been. It's not good enough and we keep and I'm confident the next board regardless of who is elected will keep pushing for this to be fixed. In the meantime, letters to the Minister of Education and Minister of Transportation & the Premier would be welcome.6 · 1 day ago
Tim HarrisWow how can they not address this? It Is Blatantly Unfair ? Maybe we can Sue the government for all the money that certain Tax Payers have spent over the last ? (number years has this been going on?) (Texada) I have a hard time believing I myself have not or was not aware of this little tidbit of information? Hmmm.1 day ago
Tim Harrissure ty an error mesage came along with your post ?1 day ago
Aaron Lewis ReidTim you should definitely speak with Doug Skinner. He's been our Board rep on the ferry advisory committee and has been in many meetings with past & present ministers with regard to this issue. He campaigned on this issue back in 2008 when he and I were both first elected and we've been battling this issue ever since.3 · 1 day ago
Tim HarrisDoug Skinner How about the Province or The Vancouver Sun Newspapers. It looks to me like somewhere along the way.you have been stonewalled .Time to pull out the Big Guns and start Blasting Away So To Speak ! Just a Thought? I mean you don;t have to be a Rocket Scientist to see the obvious unfairness here? To All the Students in our District?1 · 1 day ago
David DicksonAt the last Chamber of Commerce meeting the minister didn't seem to be aware of the issue but said he would "look into it" FYI2 · 1 day ago
Tim HarrisDavid That just makes me wonder just how much dirt has all ready been swept under the table ?1 day ago
Taylor LiebichIve lived on texada since i was born and ferry was always free for students and now for kids in sports too and its usally only the moring and after school then on you have to singh a sheet for school or sports and you get on2 · 1 day ago
Gavyne RycroftI dont get the issue? Ive lived on Texada since i was 8 years old (30 years) the only free ferries was to get to and from school and for organized sports that are not offered here. As far as i know even powell river kids dont have to pay ferry fares for field / sports trips? Whats the problem?3 · 1 day ago
Gavyne RycroftAnd as long as i can remember PR students have been using the Texada ferry for free.2 · 1 day ago
Ryan Daniel Brigdenthe ferry is free for these kids doing school related activities, as they ride a ferry twice daily, now tell us all Tim why a regular student living and schooling in PR needs free access to ferries, when they can do all the same without ferries1 · 1 day ago
Aaron Lewis ReidThe reason I suggested speaking to Doug, Tim, is so that you can get the background of what's been asked and what the answers are that have specifically have been given. When people start calling the press and writing letters without having a clear understanding of the facts they lose credibility.1 · 1 day ago
Aaron Lewis ReidChildren who have to ride the ferry in order to attend school ride the ferries free. The children who ride ferries free because they must to attend school also ride free to attend school sports events. So this applies to Texada students, yes. However, Powell River students don't need to ride a ferry to attend school and receive a 50% discount to ride the ferry for school sports. But the rub is that Powell River is isolated and our kids MUST travel via ferry to compete in school sports.1 · 1 day ago
Gavyne RycroftTim Harris have your kids ever been asked to pay ferry fares when heading to the Sunshine Coast or to Texada for a school sports/field trip?1 day ago
Ashley HullThis is where a Board-lead letter writing campaign could be helpful. Just as open letters to the community have been written before, I believe it's time to engage the public, parents and students to write to our government, as they obviously were not getting the point that this inequality needs to stop.1 day ago
Gavyne RycroftWas unaware of that. Should have made that point clear when he posted. A little unfare but doesnt really apply to Texada students getting to school free.1 day ago
Ashley HullAll costs come from someone's pocket. Inequality is when the same public cost is not covered by the same source. Just looking to level the field :)1 · 1 day ago
Aaron Lewis ReidIt's really un"fare". Powell River competes with teams on the island. Even at half price for fares the expense is crazy. Poverty here and throughout BC is a major issue and kids should have the same opportunities regardless of where they live.3 · 1 day ago
Ashley HullI appreciate your opinions. Come out on November 5th and meet the School Board candidates! Hope to see you there.2 · 1 day ago
Gavyne RycroftWell "Texada" was a bad comparison. Im not sure what kind of deal the Sunshine Coast students have with BC ferries but i suspect its a better arguement than Texada.4 · 1 day ago
Ashley HullThanks for the discussion Gavyne. I certainly haven't been a part of the long back-discussion, but I am trying to present new views on how to be heard. :) I, like Tim, was surprised when I found out that students in the lower Sunshine Coast and the Gulf Islands travelled for school-related activities for free. As much as elections are a lot of "politicking" at least they bring to light some important issues and help add to the greater discussion of what is happening in today's school system.1 · 1 day ago
Gavyne RycroftWell that is unfare.
And should be addressed.3 · 1 day ago
Frank SchmidtI will say is that the present trustees have had the last 6 years of promises to deal with student ferry costs, as well as other serious issues and it hasn't happened, I promise you electing Frank Schmidt will get results not recycled promises.1 · 1 day ago
